Day 6 Context: This lesson would be taught during the study of the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. This lesson is appropriate for students in a high school junior English class. The students in this class come from a suburban environment, and are of mixed gender, race, and include persons with disabilities.
Objective: This is a teacher guided lesson that explores the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, also working on reading and listening skills.
Pass Objectives: This lesson meets Reading/Literature Standard 2, objective 2, A; Standard 3, objective 2, B and C; Oral Language/Listening and Speaking Standard 1, all objectives; Standard 2, objective 1; and Standard 3, objective 4 for 11th Grade language arts. http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/Subject/langarts.pdf
Procedure Introduction: I begin by asking the class to take out a pencil and clear their desks to prepare for taking a quiz. Guided Practice: Hand out the typed up quiz, worth about 25 points, composed of 3 short answer questions (each worth five points) and ten character matching questions (each worth one point). Give them the first 20 minutes of the class to take the quiz. If the students cannot complete the quiz in that allotted time, ask them to turn in what they have so it can be scored, with the option to come in during overtime and complete those questions not yet attempted. I will ask them to take out their English III book and turn to page ----- to begin reading Act II of The Crucible. I will ask for volunteers from the class to read one of the characters roles in Act II. If no one volunteers, assign character roles from the role sheet or give 5 extra credit points for those who read. Make sure to assign somebody to the narrator or stage directions, unless you are prepared to read them yourself. Plan to complete Act II by the end of the 50 minute class. Conclusion: If there are a few minutes left over, hold a short discussion. What do we think of the play so far? Are the girls telling the truth about seeing the devil? Is John Proctor guilty? Is what the girls are doing right? Remind them that they should consider coming into overtime to complete their quizzes if they did not finish.
Assessment: There was a quiz at the beginning of the class to assess the student’s retention of Act I and the atmosphere of 1600s puritan life. An assessment of Act II will take place at the beginning of week 3 of the unit. Don’t forget to award 5 points extra credit to students who read if that is what you promised.
